Pizza ovens come in many different sizes and shapes, from the expensive inbuilt wood fire pizza ovens to relatively basic electric models designed for indoor use only. These different approaches all have their own advantages and people tend to find an option that works well for their particular situation.
One option that I’m personally passionate about is a BBQ pizza oven. This idea lets you have the functionality of a pizza oven and also of a grill. Doing so is great for anyone who loves variety with their cooking. At the same time, there are products out there that let you turn your grill into a pizza oven. This works well if you want to take advantage of the tools you already have. Plus, the end result is surprisingly powerful.
As a result, this post highlights the various different styles of BBQ pizza ovens that you can buy online – including ones that are fairly basic and others that are considerably more comprehensive. Regardless of your needs and preferences, there is bound to be something here that works perfectly for you.
1. Traditional Pizza Ovens With BBQ Functionality
First of all, it is actually possible to get a wood fire pizza oven and grill products. Typically, this would be something you built yourself but there are also companies that sell them online. One example is My BBQ, which produces something that looks like this:
As you can see, you basically have two different ovens that are built together, each using its own fuel source. The style works well if you want the option of grilling or cooking pizza, without having to convert between one and the other. Of course, maintaining temperature on both could be a little tricky, especially when you first use the product.
Another example is the company Toto, which has a similar idea, although the oven itself is considerably more modern and refined. The design also makes this inherently more portable, although it could still be frustrating at first. The company here is also Italian, which could make the product difficult to get to the United States.
Getting this type of pizza oven is also likely to set you back a considerable amount, regardless of the brand or the exact product. After all, you’re basically getting a traditional pizza oven and a grill – so the cost would be higher than a pizza oven on its own (and those aren’t exactly cheap).
Still, difficulties aside, the items here are good examples of what can be done with BBQ pizza ovens. It’s also likely that there will be more such options as time goes along.
2. Pizza Oven And Grill Combos
There are also products out there that have the functions of both a pizza oven and a grill, without following traditional styles. One example that I’ve seen comes from the brand Mr. Pizza. The product itself is relatively obscure but the additional functionality makes it interesting. First off, you use it as a pizza oven by using the door at the front.
When used in this way, the product is similar to other gas countertop pizza ovens, especially as it runs off a standard gas tank. It isn’t particularly large but the size is all you’d need for a portable pizza oven.
The interesting part is that you can flip the lid back and also use the pizza oven as a grill. The grill itself is on the small side but you can still get around 20 burgers on it, so it would work for many situations.
Unlike the previous options, you can’t use this product as a pizza oven and a grill at the same time, which is a disadvantage. The style also means that it simply wouldn’t get as hot as a wood fire pizza oven. But still, it’s easy to see the advantages, especially if you want to make pizza or grill on the go.
3. Pseudo BBQ Pizza Ovens
There are also some products marketed as BBQ pizza ovens that really aren’t. The product below is one example of the style.
The item is marketed as a ‘3-in-1 Pizza Oven Grill’ and the images on Amazon itself don’t give much away. From the name, you’d expect the item to act as both a pizza oven and a grill but it doesn’t really. A snapshot from the company’s video shows what you can actually expect.
So basically, this isn’t a pizza oven at all. Instead, it is just a portable grill that comes with a pizza stone. Cooking pizza on a grill is a viable approach and using a pizza stone to do so can work well. That’s why I have a list of pizza stones that you can use on a barbecue grill on this site.
But, you can do this on any BBQ grill – there’s no reason to buy a specialized product. With that in mind, products like this are simply using manipulative marketing. The item isn’t actually a pizza oven and won’t improve the quality of your pizza at all.
4. Charcoal Grill Conversions
While you can get products that function as both a BBQ and a pizza oven, they are relatively few and far between. In most cases, products that work this way tend to be either very expensive or not particularly high quality.
The alternative is a grill conversion. With this approach, you’re taking your current BBQ and turning it into a pizza oven. You can do so with a gas or a charcoal grill and there are different products for each. On a side note, you can convert a grill to a pizza oven yourself but the end results are much better when you use a product.
With charcoal grills, the various products work in the same general way. In particular, the goal is to allow you to get the pizza in and out of the grill without needing to open the lid. By doing so, the grill can get much hotter than it could normally.
The main product that you can use is the one pictured above, KettlePizza. There is already a full review of the insert that you can check out for extra details. As you can see in the image, the product acts as an insert and provides an effective way to cook your pizza. It’s also surprisingly easy to use, once you get the hang of what to expect.
One consideration with this style is wood. You need to be burning chunks of wood as well as charcoal to get the grill hot enough to cook good pizza. Otherwise, you end up with undercooked pizza, which also happens if you run out of pizza part way through, like in the image below.
There are also various ways to ensure your charcoal pizza oven cooks better pizza, such as choosing the wood carefully and even making some tweaks to the insert before you get going.
Another similar product out there is the PizzaQue Kettle Grill Kit.
The idea here is identical and the finished setup even looks very similar. However, there are key differences. Personally, I don’t like the PizzaQue version as much, because your pizza stone is resting on pieces of metal, rather than being on a flat surface.
The style simply feels unsteady to me and I was worried about tipping the pizza stone over – which would have been a disaster!
Still, there are some positive aspects, particularly the inclusion of a charcoal grate, which makes it easier to get a good distribution of fuel. The option is also considerably less expensive. The price alone may make this an interesting alternative if you are on a budget.
I have also found some other variations that are less exciting, such as the Onlyfire pizza oven. The design here is slightly different and the product doesn’t get great reviews. Plus, the item is more expensive than the PizzaQue and is less appealing – meaning there is little reason to consider it.
Overall, charcoal grill conversions are a cool option for a BBQ pizza oven and they even let you get some of that wood fired flavor. The change is also temporary, so you can choose when you use your BBQ as a pizza oven and when you use it as a grill. You can even cook other types of food in the pizza oven as long as you’re aware of the heat difference.
5. Gas Grill Conversions
The other alternative for a BBQ pizza oven is to convert a gas grill. In many ways, this is a more efficient idea, as it is easier to switch from one to the other. For that matter, some conversions even give you the chance to grill at the same time as using the pizza oven.
A gas grill conversion is also more versatile. For example, most charcoal conversions rely on kettle-style barbecues and only those of specific dimensions. If you have the right grill already (such as a Weber kettle grill), then you’re fine. But if you don’t, then there isn’t much you can do.
In contrast, a gas grill conversion will work with most 3-burner gas grills, which is the standard. This gives you may more options and considerable flexibility. Plus, there are even specialized products for alternative grill types.
An interesting option is the Pizza Oven Box from BakerStone. This is something I have reviewed in full previously and you can also buy it directly from Amazon. The box itself is made from pizza stone, which helps you reach a good temperature for cooking pizza. This is also a very easy product to get used to and you can create amazing pizzas from it, like the examples below.
While I did enjoy the BakerStone box and do recommend it, I have different favorite – which comes from the KettlePizza brand. The product is the KettlePizza Gas Pro and again you can check out my full review or buy it directly from Amazon.
Visually, this product is much less impressive. Basically, it is just a preformed sheet of metal that has an inbuilt thermometer and a handle. There is also a pizza stone with it, which isn’t evident in this image.
Simple or not, the product works exceptionally well and it maintains a pizza cooking temperature effectively. The simplicity is also an advantage. This makes it very easy to get the thing set up and cleaning is that much simpler as well. The back does get hotter than the front (no surprise), so you’ll need to turn pizzas once during cooking.
But, that’s not a major issue and you can make great pizzas with this product too.
One other option for a gas grill conversion is the item below, from the brand Camp Chef.
The general concept is mostly the same as the BakerStone box, although there are some variations in the visual style. However, the biggest difference is that this option is specifically designed for Camp Chef’s portable gas grills.
There is also a smaller size available, although this one is less popular overall.
Both versions rely on using a Camp Chef grill, which is a pain. But, the grills are relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to various countertop pizza ovens. This means that you could feasibly get both the grill itself and the accessory without breaking the bank.
Whether or not this is worth it really depends on whether you need a portable grill. For myself personally, I prefer the other gas conversions and would turn to a charcoal conversion if I wanted something portable. However, if you like the idea of a portable gas grill, then this isn’t a bad direction to consider.
What Suits You?
So, what do you think about all of these options? Is there one (or more) that really stands out to you? Personally, I prefer the grill conversions, especially as they let really do produce amazing pizzas. Of those two styles, I currently lean toward the gas grill conversion but I admit that I’m still playing around with both options and learning more as I go.
But, a charcoal conversion does have its advantages too, especially if you’re looking for something that is easier to take tailgating or camping.
