When you want to lose weight, regular exercise and a healthy diet are two important things prescribed by doctors and health experts. That’s why we flock to the gym and sweat it out while drinking mineral water to replenish our fluids.
But for some people, a workout is never complete without a protein shake.
Once a drink that was exclusive to bodybuilders, protein shakes are now popular among the public. Many influencers and personalities even credit it for helping them lose fat and build muscle.
At its very basic, the drink is a shake made from protein powder (made from either casein or whey, although there are vegan substitutes) mixed with water or milk. It’s meant to supplement, not replace, your food intake. When you drink one after a workout, it provides protein for the muscles so that they can start repairing and rebuilding themselves immediately.
Because they’re protein in powder form, they need to be mixed with a liquid. Bodybuilders would bring a packet into the gym, pour it into a shaker filled with water, and shake it to mix the protein powder smoothly into the liquid.
When blenders became popular, people began to use them to mix their protein shakes because it gave the mixture a smoother texture that made it easy to drink. Around that time, people also began adding fruits to the basic protein shake formula, and the blender made it easy to keep the fruit pulp intact while making the drink smooth.
Fruit fiber and protein help you feel you full, which is exactly the effect you want from a protein shake.
A blender is also very convenient. You spend less time and less energy in making your protein drink. You won’t have to deal with those lumpy leftovers of protein powder that refuse to be shaken down to submission. A blender will make quick work of that.
These days, the protein shake blender has become a nifty kitchen appliance. Some models can now be used not only for protein shakes but also for baby food and frozen drinks. Others are powerful enough to grind fresh coffee beans or nuts for pesto sauces.
Some are even portable enough for the gym, with cups that are designed to be sports bottles to store your freshly made protein shake.
And while it’s easy to get distracted with all these extra features, always remember that the best blender for protein shakes is the one that makes exactly the best protein shake you’ve ever drunk.
Because why else would you be reading this article if not to buy one for your post-gym drink? Here are my top recommendations for the best protein shake blenders in the market.

Buyers Guide to Finding the Best Protein Shake Blenders
When buying a kitchen appliance, I always try to assess my choices along three parameters: how efficient, how “smart”, and are they versatile enough? Here’s what you should be looking out when buying the best blender for your protein shake.
While it’s not the sole factor in discerning what makes the best blender, the quality of the blade will have an impact on its overall performance. A poor quality blade will not be able to blend things smoothly. Even if the blender has a powerful motor backing it up, you’ll end up with a broken blade.
Most blades are made of stainless steel; some even have teflon coating to make them scratch-resistant but if you’re wary about teflon, plain high quality stainless steel is just as fine.
Some models have single blades, some have multiple blades. Having two or more blades can give you more control over the texture of your protein shake but if you’re not really looking for more precision, a single blade is better in the long run. It’s also one less blade to wash.
Not all stainless steel blades can be used for crushing and blending anything. If you want to crush ice with your drink, find a model that has an ice-crushing blade.
Check out its wattage. You need a model that has at least 500 watts of power in order to make a protein shake with crushed ice. Anything less than that won’t be able to crush the ice efficiently. It also won’t be able to handle big chunks of fruits so your smoothie will be a bit chunkier.
Some motors have copper in it so that it won’t overheat quickly. The copper also makes it longer lasting.
Do check if the motor is also noisy. While these blenders are relatively quiet, only you can decide if they’re quiet enough for you.
The blender containers usually come in two types: plastic or glass. Plastic is more convenient; it’s lighter and you don’t have to worry about breaking it if you accidentally dropped it while running the treadmill. But it also carries a heavy carbon footprint.
Glass is more eco-friendly and can last for far longer than a plastic bottle. But would you lug around a glass bottle in the gym?
If it’s plastic, check if it is food grade quality and BPA-free. If it’s glass, check how thick it is and if it’s relatively shatter-proof. This is a good general rule for other glass kitchen tools too, like glass kettles.
How functional is it? A protein shake blender is different from your tabletop kitchen blender is that it’s designed to produce really good shakes and smoothies in terms of texture and quality. It also has a bottle so that you can easily make and drink the protein shake on the spot.
Some blenders have been intentionally designed to have rounded rectangle bottles. This makes it easier for the ingredients to be funneled into the blade instead of going in circles which sometimes happens in a round bottle. It makes for a smoother protein shake.
Another thing to look out for is how the blades are connected to the motor. Sometimes the blade placement makes it difficult to blend the ingredients that are funneled into the bottom so you get a chunky and rough drink.
Can the container be converted into a sports bottle? Is its lid tight and sealed? Are there clear markings along its side so you can use it also for measuring quantities of food?
Is it non-slip and easy-grip? Is it portable enough to be stored in a gym bag? Do you find it beautiful? These are design questions that are also important so that you can enjoy using your protein shake blender.
Can it do more than just a protein shake or smoothee? Sometimes the add-in features can add to a product’s cost. But some people don’t mind paying for something expensive if they can use the appliance for something else at the same level of efficiency. There’s one on the above list that can make baby food, something that a gym-going mother would find useful.
Pick a blender where the versatility is something that you can make optimal use of.
