Pizza is the perfect food for any occasion and that goes double for tailgating. I can’t think of much better than being able to make your own pizzas as part of a tailgating party – especially with all your mates around. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with traditional fare either. But, why not change things up while you have the chance?
I’ve previously written about different ways to make pizza while tailgating, which includes relying on either a gas or a charcoal barbecue with an accessory. For that matter, could even just cook on the grill directly, although the end result isn’t nearly as good.
In this case, the post focuses on just one option, using a portable pizza oven for tailgating. This includes the various different products that are out there, along with how they stack up against one another.
This particular product is one of the most common styles of portable pizza oven that you will see. It’s also an incredibly portable product, so you could easily use it while tailgating and also in the backyard or even when camping or having a picnic.
The device itself is a tabletop model, so it will sit on a camping table or even directly on the tailgate. It is simply powered through a propane tank and you can use either a 1 lb gas tank or a full 20 lb one, depending on your situation.
Needless to say, the smaller tank is considerably more portable. Plus, the pizza oven runs for around 2 hours off the 1 lb bottle. That’s probably going to be long enough for most situations.
Now, the countertop pizza oven design is far from unique and there are many other products out there. But, this one does stand out because of the overall appearance and functionality of the device. It also gets consistently good reviews and will reach the temperatures you need quickly.
This model can be considered a step down from the previous one, although both products do perform the same general role. Once again, the pizza oven works with a 1 lb or a 20 lb gas tank, although you do need to buy a separate adaptor for the 1 lb option.
Realistically, the biggest differences between this and the previous model are visual style and price. Although this one isn’t as efficient, the differences in time and temperature aren’t dramatic. As a result, either could work fine for tailgating.
This model is also considerably less expensive and is one of the cheapest options for a countertop pizza oven. That aspect alone may make it worth looking into.
Cuisinart Portable Pizza Oven
This pizza oven has a different visual style to the previous options but the general functionality is about the same. As with those models, this one is powered by propane and can use either a 1 lb or a 20 lb gas bottle.
The included pizza stone is 13-inch and the pizza peel is 12-inch, meaning your pizzas have to be around 12 inches or less to work well. This was the same for the previous two models and is a good size for most tailgating events.
With this model, there are also various options for supports. For one thing, you can buy it with a fold down stand, which makes it even more portable and practical. This also means you don’t have to worry about where you place the pizza oven, providing that the ground is relatively flat.
There is also a folding grill stand that works with it, which also offers a place for a large gas bottle. Realistically, that stand would be great if you use the pizza oven in your backyard but it’s less relevant for tailgating. It could still be an option though, especially as the stand is foldable, making it easy to store and use.
Camp Chef Pizza Oven
In many ways, this Camp Chef Pizza Oven is fairly similar to the previous examples, including the time it takes to heat and the ability to use either size of gas bottle. However, one key difference is the pizza stone. In this case, the stone isn’t round but it is a rectangle.
The difference in stone shape means that you can potentially cook two pizzas in the oven at the same time, rather than just one (as the image shows). Estimates on the sales page suggest that you could either make two 10-inch pizzas at the same time or one 12-inch pizza. You could also vary up the shape of your pizzas and get two oval ones in there.
This flexibility isn’t especially common, as most other portable pizza ovens use round stones. So, the pizza oven may be particularly powerful for anybody who wants to cook for two at the same time.
Mr. Pizza Pizza Oven And Grill
This particular pizza oven isn’t nearly as popular or well-known as most of the other entries. However, it does actually stand out when it comes to tailgating. In particular, the item isn’t just a pizza oven. It also functions as a small grill when you flip the entire top part back.
Now, the grill itself isn’t particularly large but the feature is useful for tailgating. The company estimates that you can cook around 20 burgers at a time on it. That’s fairly impressive and it would involve less effort to bring one product with you than to worry about a pizza oven and a grill.
One limitation is that the pizza oven is designed for a full gas tank, rather than a 1 lb portable one. The company makes no mention about whether you can use a 1 lb gas tank – but it’s likely that you can if you buy the converter separately. After all, most of the other propane pizza ovens will work with either size gas tank.
Unni 3 Portable Wood Pellet Pizza Oven
The Uuni 3 is different than any other pizza oven that I’ve seen and the uniqueness is related to the fuel it uses. In particular, the Unni makes use of wood pellets as a source of fuel, rather than gas, charcoal or wood chunks.
By doing so, the model gives the temperature and flavor associated with wood fired cooking but in a much less expensive and more convenient package. As a result, you end up with similar outcomes to what a wood fire pizza oven offers – but you’re getting them from a portable product.
For tailgating, this idea is perfect. The pizza oven could easily be placed on the tailgate or on a table and be used from there. The source of heat also makes this more powerful than most of the other options in the list – and the oven gets up to more than 900°F. That’s an ideal temperature for cooking pizza and can produce some amazing results.
Of course, the shape is a little odd and makes the product less portable overall. But, if you wanted the extra heat, this pizza oven could be the way to go.

KettlePizza Weber Grill Insert
It may not be a pizza oven in the traditional sense but this KettlePizza insert is another good choice if you want to cook pizza while tailgating. In this case, the product is a kit that lets you turn a kettle grill into a fairly powerful pizza oven. The kit is specifically designed for Weber grills, although it can work with some other types of kettle grill.
This type of pizza oven is extremely appealing for anybody who already has a kettle grill and uses it regularly for tailgating. After all, this type of grill is extremely portable, so why not make pizzas with it too?
Additionally, you use a combination of wood and charcoal when cooking pizzas with this type of insert. By doing so, your pizza ends up with that smoky flavor that is normally associated with wood fired pizza. At the same time, the insert does serve to make the grill hotter overall, so you could use it for other types of cooking as well.
Camp Chef Pizza Oven Accessory
While we’re on the topic of turning a barbecue into a pizza oven, here’s another product to consider. Unlike the previous example, this one is designed for a gas grill, which means it works differently. For one thing, the accessory simply goes on top of the grill, rather than being inserted into it. This makes it much easier to actually use your barbecue as a grill when you want to.
There are other products out there that convert a gas grill into a pizza oven and my personal favorite is the KettlePizza Gas Pro. However, most other options are designed for standard 3-burner gas grills, which you probably wouldn’t take tailgating. In contrast, the Camp Chef accessory is specifically designed for their portable grills.
With that in mind, the accessory could be a great choice if you already own one of the grills from Camp Chef – or if you’re planning to get one in the near future. And, to be honest, there are some major advantages of having a portable gas grill, especially as the entire setup isn’t excessively expensive.
If nothing else, this ends up being a decent alternative approach to consider.
What’s The Best Choice?
There is a surprising number of options for making pizza while you’re tailgating and all of these products would do the job well. In many ways, the final decision comes down to what you’re looking for.
For example, I’m personally fond of barbecue conversion products because they tend to be easy to use – and are also great for making pizza on your patio. Plus, you’re taking advantage of a tool you already have.
But, for tailgating, you may be more interested in the various independent pizza ovens that were highlighted in this list. These have the advantage of being a single product, one that is fairly easy to use. Plus, they are specifically designed for cooking pizza, which isn’t true for a grill conversion.
