40 Vegan Birthday Cakes That You Won’t Believe Are Vegan

Vegan Birthday Cakes. A vegan birthday cake with sparklers against a dark background

What’s a birthday party without a cake, right? Birthday cakes aren’t always simple, either. They’ve been getting progressively more exciting and intricate. But, what about vegan birthday cakes? Such cakes need to avoid eggs and dairy products, which make them a little challenging.

Thankfully, you can make some stunning vegan birthday cakes. Don’t worry, we’re not just talking about no bake vegan cheesecakes here. Instead, many of these cakes look and taste just like the real thing. They often use egg substitutes to achieve this effect, along with other ingredient changes.

Try serving one of these to your guests without telling them that the cake is vegan. They’d probably think it’s a regular cake.

P.S. If you don’t want to make your own cake, you could try ordering online through cake delivery services. Most of these don’t specialize in vegan cakes, but some may be open to customizing their cakes to meet your needs.

There are also cake of the month clubs. These send you delicious cakes every single month, without any effort on your part.

Finally, why not try a cake made of fruit? Seriously. These are a thing and they look stunning. Of course, they don’t freeze well.

Vegan Birthday Cakes (With Pictures!)

When Stars Align

A post shared by VEGAN CELEBRATION CAKES (@lushplantbasedbakes)

How cool is this? The cake would be perfect for any kid who’s a fan of the stars (or even a few adults, for that matter). I love the contrast of the dark blue background with the golden stars, moon, and rocket ship.

The toppers make the cake even more impressive. They don’t look edible, but that hardly matters. You still get a great first impression with the cake and that has the biggest impact.

Raw, Layered, And Stunning

This is one of the best examples of the raw vegan cake style. Seriously, the treat does everything right, including the caramel colored topping and layers, plus fresh figs, berries, and even some donuts.

All The Colors

A post shared by CicoCebali (@cicocebali)

This cake follows the typical vegan no bake style. While that style can get a bit boring at times, you have to admit, this cake knocks the idea out of the park. I love the use of brightly colored frosting, plus flowers, berries, and gooseberries.

The gooseberries are particularly remarkable, partly because of their paper-like shells and also because they’re not often found on desserts. Besides, a cake like this is guaranteed to impress any set of guests. How could it not?

Decadent Chocolate And Raspberry

The fantastic thing about this cake is that it doesn’t look vegan in the slightest. It’s impressive too, with layers of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, and fruit.

It would also be a fun cake to serve as the layers aren’t obvious from the outside at all. Instead, if you ice it well, it’s just going to look like a simple chocolate cake.

A Little Black And Blue

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Vegan Cake (@the.vegan.cake)

Then there’s this cake. The dark coloring makes it quite unusual, as do all the chocolate drips. These are complemented by Oreo halves and amazing dark icing.

The colors would make this a perfect Halloween cake, especially as the dripping icing does look a little like blood. Or, perhaps this is for someone utterly sick of all the bright and flowery cakes out there.

Layers Of Chocolate

You really can make a layered chocolate cake like this on a vegan diet. The cake is also as tasty and decadent as any non-vegan version, perhaps even more so.

This isn’t just a cake for inspiration either. The pin for this one includes the recipe, giving you the chance to make it for yourself.

Oh, and the actual recipe is called Vegan Chocolate Layer Skull Cake because those really are little chocolate skulls sitting on the top.

Golden Bischoff Cake

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Prana (@pranacafe.11)

Don’t the colors make this cake look simply stunning? It’s the perfect collection of golden brown tones, including tasty frosting and cookies.

I particularly love the ‘moat’ of cookie crumbs. This isn’t a common style, which makes it look even more impressive.

Funfetti Birthday Cake

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Cyndi ⓥ (@cyndi_lou_fta)

Cakes don’t need to be elegant to be amazing. Sometimes you get treats like this that are simply a mess instead.

Yet, somehow the messiness isn’t a bad thing at all. The cake still looks extremely impressive. It would also be much easier to make than the carefully designed and complex cakes featured elsewhere on this list.

Sleeping Beauty Cake

This cake was inspired by Sleeping Beauty, particularly the 16th birthday cake that Aurora was given. It’s an interesting combination of elegant and messy, and would be perfect for any teenage girl.

The fact that this is also a vegan friendly cake makes it that much better.

A Geode In Cake Form

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Blossom & Bee Vegan Bakehouse (@blossomandbeebakehouse)

This would be tough cake to make unless you were very experienced. Isn’t it a stunner though? The style is incredibly unusual, so it would be a fantastic way to impress guests.

It would be easy to experiment with the colors as well. What about a version using all purples or all pinks?

A Beautiful Spin On Chocolate And Raspberry

https://www.pinterest.nz/pin/964262970192390012

While chocolate and raspberry is a common flavor combination, this cake still manages to stand out. The small garnishes around the edge of the top and the cake base are part of the appeal. These are elegant enough to elevate the cake, without taking the whole thing over.

Chocolate Orange Cake

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Florida vegan cheesecakes (@greencheesecakes)

Here’s another classic cake flavor combination – chocolate and orange. The icing on this cake is splendid, as it’s not as bright as most chocolate orange cakes. It’s subtle instead and nicely contrasts the oranges.

The greenery on the top of the cake is a nice touch too and keeps everything looking elegant.

A Cake Filled With Love

Wouldn’t this raspberry cake be perfect for a loved one? It even has little hearts made from fresh raspberries.

There’s also raspberry compote within the cake itself, which gives it a vibrant burst of flavor. The light pink icing is a nice touch too. It plays on the romantic theme without going over the top.

Lemon Lime Cake

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by CicoCebali (@cicocebali)

The base of this cake might look familiar, as it’s that typical vegan cheesecake style. But, seriously, look at all the toppings. These take up almost as much space as the cake itself and they’re extraordinary.

The gooseberries create a nice contrast against the dark blue fruit. However, they’re not essential. You could easily swap them for another type of fruit if gooseberries are too difficult to find.

S’mores Galore

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/3588874694140125

Love s’mores? If so, this cake is for you. The topping alone is stunning, especially with melted chocolate running down the side. Even the cake itself looks like a giant marshmallow.

Also – this really is a vegan cake. I had to double check, as it really doesn’t look like it. But, yes, completely vegan.

50 Today

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gemma Thurgood (@prettywildandtastycakesbakes)

This 50th birthday cake must have blown everyone away when it was served, as it’s completely stunning. Contrasting the dark blue icing with gold was a masterstroke. Doing so would be enough to make the cake stand out, even without the large flower and 50.

If nothing else, the cake highlights how effective color can be. Even a simple and boring cake would look fantastic if you used this color combination.

Not Just Berries, But Gin Too!

While this cake does look amazing, the appearance is just one factor. It also uses gin-infused syrup and blackberry jam. Those two ingredients create a divine flavor balance.

Then there are the flowers on top. We can’t forget about those, can we? Honestly, flowers should be used on cakes much more often. They make the cake look so much more exciting.

Shades Of Harry Potter

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Vegan Ivy (@sweetnativewoman)

Looking for a themed birthday cake? How about this one? The orange and yellow layers make it stand out, especially with the chocolate drips running down the side.

It doesn’t need to be a Harry Potter cake either. You could easily take off the topper and just add candles. After all, an orange and yellow cake is going to stand out no matter what.

Raspberry Cream Cake

We highlighted a raspberry chocolate cake earlier. This one follows a different style though, as it’s more like a layered vegan cheesecake than a traditional birthday cake.

That’s not such a bad thing, though, as the cake does look stunning. This time there’s a stack of berries on top and one rose. These are perfect as a fresh and simple garnish, one that doesn’t take too much work.

Toy Story Brought To Life

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Esther Lucas (@poppy_bakes_cakes)

We can’t just talk about adult birthday cakes, can we? Cakes for kids are quite fun too, including this tiny Toy Story cake.

There’s so much to love with the cake, including how it highlights the two main characters in vibrant colors. The size is pretty cool too. After all, a two-year-old doesn’t need a huge cake. A tiny one like this will be just fine.

Earl Grey And Lavender

Earl grey and lavender is an interesting flavor combination. While it’s certainly not a traditional one, it is getting more common as time goes on.

A cake like this one could be perfect if you want something a little bit different. The light color is interesting too. Perhaps you’d serve it at a blue-themed event or even a baby shower.

Reduced Sugar Sponge Cake

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Emma (@emmycakes91)

This tall sponge cake shows that simple can be amazing. The white icing contrasts particularly well with the fresh berries, giving you a vibrant treat.

This is also a reduced sugar cake. That’s fantastic, as many cakes are far sweeter than they need to be. Don’t worry though, this one should still taste extremely good.

Chocolate Crepe Cake

This cake is a refreshing change of pace. It relies on chocolate crepes that are layered with plenty of chocolate crepes, chocolate sauce, and coconut cream.

The crepe style is a fantastic way to impress people. After all, traditional cakes have been done to death. It’s great to find something new.

A Cake Straight From The Pages

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Blossom & Bee Vegan Bakehouse (@blossomandbeebakehouse)

This cake gets inspiration straight from The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It would be excellent for kids, although adults would probably love it too.

The colored drips are stunning and really make the cake special. They’re much more interesting than having just one color all the way around.

A Beautiful Lemon Blueberry Layer Cake

Isn’t this sponge cake beautiful? The light layers of sponge work excellently with the dark blueberry sauce.

You can’t see from the image, but the cake also has lemon frosting. This would work perfectly with the berries, adding some extra brightness to the mix.

A Beautiful Unicorn

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Easygovegan (@easygovegan)

The decorations on this cake are so cool. It just took a couple of black eyebrows, two ears, and a horn to make the cake look like a happy unicorn.

And honestly, it would be a beautiful cake even without those elements. There’s something about the pastel colors that works incredibly well.

Lemon, Blueberries, And Elegance

This is another cake where the toppings really bring it all together. This time, sliced and slightly dehydrated lemons dominate, complemented by white piped frosting, blueberries, and daisies. The daisies are an unexpected touch, yet they really do work.

Then there’s the cake itself. It’s beautifully layered and even includes rich blueberry cream.

Plenty Of Options

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by CicoCebali (@cicocebali)

Why have one cake when you can have three? These cakes are all vegan riffs on cheesecakes, each with a different flavor.

I love the blue version the most. There’s something about the contrast of colors that just pops off the screen. I’m sure they all taste delicious as well.

A Raspberry And Matcha Cake

Raspberry and matcha is an unusual combination, especially for a cake. You can see it a little in the picture, where there’s a small green layer at the bottom and plenty of pink icing going over it.

The cake could be excellent if you already love matcha or if you’re just wanting to try something new.

This is another cake that plays around with flowers. It could be garnished other ways too, so why not experiment if you make this one for yourself?

Decadent And Beautiful

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mohini Veg (@mohini_veg)

Dark cakes are always stunners. This one has the extra feature of a layer of cream.

The garnishing style is pretty cool too. I don’t know how the gold tinged chocolate hearts were made, but now I want to make some for myself. They’d look good on almost any cake. A small bag of them could even be a fun gift.

Fantastic Colors

Here’s the other extreme with cake colors – a white cake with blue and green coloring, plus blue and yellow sprinkles. It looks like something for a fun summer party, perhaps for a child.

There’s a type of ocean theme going on with this cake, which is pretty cool.

A Flowery Carrot Cake

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bee Vegan Bakery (@beeveganbakery)

Carrot cakes are pretty boring, aren’t they? This one certainly isn’t.

It’s the garnishes that really make it, including plenty of piped shapes and a few bright flowers that perfectly complement them.

I love how there are even some flower petals and pollen on the cake too. These make it even more exciting, as the style isn’t followed often at all.

A Treat That’s Certain To Impress

Speaking of impressive, what do you think of this one? It reminds me of vanilla ice cream, but it’s actually a light vegan cake.

Plus, this is a somewhat elaborate cake, with three layers of sponge and two layers of a jam-based filling. The pin even includes a link to the recipe, which offers details about how to make the cake and also how to decorate it.

Kitty And Chewie

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Yvonne’s Vegan Kitchen (@yvonnesvegankitchen)

These two tiny cakes were originally made for twins. I’m sure you can guess what their interests are.

While they’re both stunning, it’s the Chewbacca one that takes the cake (so to speak). The lines of his hair look surprisingly realistic. Those same techniques could be applied to other characters too. Who knows what you could make with a little experimenting.

Raspberry And Vanilla With Plenty Of Flair

https://twitter.com/KatieKaitchuck/status/1589856454428995584

Raspberry and vanilla cakes aren’t normally very exciting. This one is an exception though. The chocolate drips, cream, and raspberries all combine to make a stunning cake.

I love the height of it too. This seems like a taller cake than normal and the extra height works well.

Funfetti With Some Amazing Colors

It’s always fantastic when cakes play with colors. This one does exactly that, offering a sunset-like scene made from pinks, purples, blues, and yellows. It’s a little like tie dye and looks amazing.

Then there are the treats scattered around the bottom and the cream domes on top. Honestly, who wouldn’t be impressed with the cake?

Pigs In Mud

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by 108 Delectable Delights (@108_delectable_delights)

I initially thought that pigs were an odd choice for a vegan cake, but they’re playing happily, so I guess that makes it okay.

The cake itself is pretty cool. It’s a chocolate cake with plenty of caramel, that’s then been topped with chocolate ganache and surrounded by chocolate frosting. It would be ideal for any chocolate lover or any kid, for that matter.

A Ketchup Cake (of all things)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Dolly’s Vegan Kitchen (@dollysvegankitchen)

Okay, so this is a very specialized treat – a ketchup cake. I don’t think it actually tastes like ketchup though. Instead, the cake simply relies on red frosting and ketchup packets.

It would be a fun one for anyone who loves ketchup or if you just wanted to confuse the birthday boy.

A Vegan Tree Stump

The tree stump cake style has been getting pretty popular. That’s not too surprising, as it does look stunning. This is a vegan version, complete with some impressive ingredients and even meringue mushrooms.

The mushrooms are a fun addition, as they show that life persists, even after a tree has been cut down.

Featuring Vanilla And Caramel

This final cake keeps the flavors relatively simple, with vanilla and caramel. It’s still an impressive cake though, with two tiers, caramel drips, and multiple layers. Honestly, how can you go wrong?
