Almonds do have a distinct nutty flavor that you wouldn’t get from any other nut or grain. This crust also has that rich flavor that I surprisingly liked for something savory like a pizza. So, this recipe with almond flour gets a definite “two-thumbs-up” for me flavorwise.
Ease and simplicity? Another thumb up? How could I possibly be put off, if making a pizza crust only requires me to mix flour, eggs, oil, and salt until it comes into a smooth ball. Really easy!
No yeast. No rising time needed. This dough is more than willing to be rolled out into a crust in an instant.
Just to make sure my crust releases without any problem after baking, I’ve brushed my pan with a bit of coconut oil and dusted it with a little more almond flour. Those bits of almond flour will also toast up nicely as this crust bakes, giving it much more nutty goodness.
The natural oils from the almonds, plus the coconut oil we’ve put in makes this dough really smooth and such a joy to work with. You can simply form it into shape with your fingers, no exaggeration there.
I was really surprised to see this dough come out looking like some rustic bread after a short prebake in the oven – crisp on the surface and with a very nice light brown color.
I could smell right away from the oven that this crust was gonna be tasty on its own. Making that flavor stand out for this pizza was definitely the right thing to do. A simple Florentine-inspired topping of some blanched spinach leaves and some mild cheese would be an excellent choice I believe. As a bonus, this choice of toppings is definitely keeping this pizza on the low-side of the carbs scale.
Crisp, light, and flavorful. A near-perfect gluten-free pizza dough alternative.
Almond Flour
Without a doubt, almond flour is one of the most popular options for gluten-free flour, partly because it works well for so many different types of diets. For example, almond flour is common in low carb, keto, Whole30 and paleo diets.
In fact, the only diets that exclude almond flour are immune-based ones, such as AIP. After all, some people do have immune responses to almonds. If that’s the case for you, then the main alternative is coconut flour, which is equally popular and is also used across most types of diets.
As the name suggests, almond flour is made from almonds. In fact, the flour is literally just ground up almonds. This means that you are getting all the health benefits and the nutritional profile that almonds have to offer.
Even though almond flour is just almonds, most foods you make won’t actually taste like the nut at all. Instead, you would have to add in almond flavoring if you wanted that flavor. This isn’t a bad thing though, as it serves to make almond flour much more versatile overall.
In some cases, the term almond meal is also used. For the most part, almond flour and almond meal are basically the same thing and the words are used interchangeably. However, almond flour will sometimes be more finely ground, resulting in a lighter product overall.
Using almond flour is also surprisingly easy. Many recipes for baking will work if you simply replace regular flour with the same volume of almond flour. If you are using a rising agent, you would need to add a little more of it, as almond flour is heavier than other types of flour.
Of course, almond flour doesn’t have gluten in it, so it won’t give you the same elasticity or binding that you find with wheat flour. This can also mean that you have to add in some more egg or another binder.
Nevertheless, once you get accustomed to using almond flour, those tweaks can be easy to make. Besides that, any recipes designed for almond flour will already be optimized for the unique elements of the flour. This makes recipes a perfect place to start.
One other aspect to note is simply that almond flour is very easy to use. I found that when making this pizza dough recipe. In fact, it took barely any effort to get the dough right and I didn’t need to use many ingredients either. Both aspects are a major win, especially as the dough tasted great as well.
Of course, with the popularity of almond flour, there is no shortage of other recipes that feature the flour. For example, many gluten-free dessert cookbooks rely on almond flour and there are also many savory examples of recipes, like Baked Paleo Chicken Tenders, Squash Ravioli and Sausage and Apple Stuffing.

Can I use this to make a dessert pizza
Food For Net
Yes, but it depends on what type of dessert you’re making, and whether or not the texture will fit. Almond flour is pretty common in gluten free desserts though.
