A vanilla soft serve ice cream in a cone

Anyone with an avid sweet tooth may argue that dessert is just as important of a meal as breakfast! From cinnamon and ice cream to candy and chocolate, the world is so full of amazing, delicious sweet treats that can be made into anything.

From lava cakes to citrus milkshakes, desserts exist in all forms and trying out new, sweet things can be a lot of fun. What isn’t fun is when a dessert sounds amazing but ultimately disappoints. Unfortunately, this is often the case with fast food.

Many fast food joints will focus on their main offering, whether it’s burgers, chicken, pizza, etc, and everything else is an afterthought. They add desserts to the menu because they know people like something sweet, but they don’t put too much thought or effort into the dish,

It’s a real treat, then, when you order a fast food dessert to finish off your meal and it’s actually good. Every once in a while, you get a fast food place that does put thought into their desserts, and it’s this extra effort that has customers coming back over and over again for their tasty offerings.

This is the case with the iconic McDonald’s McFlurry – even though their main theme has always been burgers, these delicious ice cream masterpieces dominate the fast food dessert realm, and rightly so

But, the McFlurry isn't the only quality dessert you’ll find when you need a quick, on-the-go meal. There are plenty of good options out there once you start looking. Some of them might surprise you!

McDonald’s hot fudge sundae is the ultimate choice for a simple, classic, delicious sundae. It’s made with their classic soft serve ice cream and topped with a generous helping of creamy, warm fudge sauce.

If you’re craving a little extra chocolate, you can ask for another layer of fudge sauce on the bottom and they’re usually happy to oblige. It’s not fancy, but it’s a sundae that’s guaranteed to never disappoint and it’s the perfect treat when you just want something small and light.

2. Sonic Blast

The Sonic blast is an ice cream-based dessert that blends Sonic's real ice cream with your chosen flavor or toppings and serves it with whipped cream on top. They have plenty of flavors to choose from but their most popular by far is the Blast made with Oreo cookie pieces.

The pieces are mixed right in with the ice cream and in addition to the whipped cream, the dessert is topped off with a handful of larger oreo chunks. Other toppings include snickers bars, peanut butter cups, Butterfinger candy, and M&Ms.

3. Jack in the Box Mini Churros

jack in the box mini churros

Churros are a fun, unique dessert that don’t often get enough credit. Churros are a common find at festivals, carnivals, and other outdoor events but it not as often found in a restaurant setting. Jack in the Box has made their churros bite-sized and even better than the ones you’d find out on the street.

They cover them in even more cinnamon and they use pure cane sugar, making them slightly healthier than the ones beside a traveling Ferris wheel. Each order comes with five mini churros which makes a great snack or a nice light dessert after your meal. They’re also great for sharing if everyone just wants a little bite of something sweet.

4. Domino's Lava Cake

domninos lava cake

For a place so well-known for pizza and nothing else, Domino's lava cake dessert has proven quite delicious and it is a popular choice among customers. It’s a small, simple dessert that features a crunchy, brownie-like chocolate cake on the outside and warm, molten chocolate on the inside.

It’s the perfect way to finish off your meal after a few slices of pizza and it’s great for sharing as the lava cake isn't too big and you can order a bunch.

Domino's doesn’t have a lot of dessert options, but what they’ve got, they do well. The lava cake is popular because it’s a delicious concept but also because they get it right each time. This type of cake can be easily ruined by poor texture, not enough molten chocolate, etc, but Dominos is consistent with these cakes which is what has people returning for them.

5. Popeyes Cinnamon Apple Pie

Popeye’s doesn’t have the most extensive dessert menu, but they don’t need it considering how much of a success their little apple pies are. Designed more like a turnover, the apple pie has hot, gooey, cinnamon apple goodness on the inside surrounded by a hot, crispy crust. Unlike a slice of traditionally shaped apple pie, this gives you the perfect balance of crispy crust and soft warm apple insides with every single bite.

While they could make a great snack on their own, but the apple pies are also the perfect way to finish off a meal. They’re small, sweet, and pretty light as desserts go. If you’ve got a hankering for some extra sweetness, you can always order two and still not feel like you’re overdoing it.

6. White Castle Fudge-Dipped Cheesecake

White Castle has gone a slightly less traditional route with their dessert menu. All three of the items are prepared on a stick. Not only is this kind of fun but it makes for easy and convenient one-handed eating.

Their most popular offering is the fudge-dipped cheesecake. There’s a lot going on here but the flavors complement each other perfectly. It features a chunk of classic, creamy, rich cheesecake complete with a layer of crunchy graham-cracker crust.

The whole thing is placed on a stick and dipped a little more than halfway into a rich, chocolatey fudge sauce which then hardens and adds a nice crunch. The other desserts also available on a stick are a plain brownie that is also fudge-dipped, and a slice of butter cake which is not dipped in fudge.

7. Chick-Fil-A Frosted Sunrise

This delicious, citrusy treat from Chick-Fil-A is essentially a unique twist on a traditional milkshake. Known as the frosted sunshine, the dessert is handspun with their special ice cream – the famous vanilla icedream – and some refreshing orange juice.

This combination creates a sweet and subtly orangey dessert with a consistency that allows you to drink it from a straw or scoop it up with a spoon – whichever you prefer. The simple, light flavor makes it a wonderfully refreshing experience in the heat of the summer, but that’s not to say you can’t enjoy it any other time of the year.

8. Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists

Taco Bell offers yet another take on the cinnamon dessert theme in the way of Cinnabon delights and cinnamon twists. Of the two, the cinnamon twists often prove to be more popular. The twists themselves are puffed and crispy corn twists that are sprinkled with the perfect combination of cinnamon and sugar.

They are light, sweet, and delicious and for any cinnamon enthusiast, they are extremely addictive. One order comes with a good handful of the twists, but there’s no shame in ordering extra if you’ve got an extra large craving to kick!

9. McDonald’s M&M McFlurry

McDonald’s sundaes will never fail you when you want something simple and classic, but the McFlurry’s are just as good of a go-to for something bulkier and more flavorful. The McFlurries feature their traditional soft serve vanilla ice cream swirled together with your choice of available toppings.

The dessert has a thicker, creamier texture than plain ice cream, and whichever topping you’ve chosen blends in with the ice cream and creates a unique flavor. Among the most popular McFlurries is the M&M McFlurry. Certain flavors come and go and others may be limited edition, but the M&M option is always there and it’s always a fan favorite.

10. Chick-Fil-A Icedream Cone

If you’re after a plain and traditional ice cream cone, Chick-Fil-A is the place to be. Not only do they offer a classic, simple vanilla taste but they do it in a healthier way than most. While it’s absolutely delicious, you may notice that the icedream doesn’t taste quite like regular ice cream. This is because it’s made from slightly different ingredients, including milk fat and nonfat milk, among other things.

This frozen dairy treat mimics ice cream in a delightful way but it’s actually lighter and much lower in calories, coming in at just 130 calories for a regular ice cream cone. So, not only is this a great-tasting treat but you don’t even have to feel guilty about having it!
