6 Cat Food Subscription Boxes Your Fur Baby Will Love!

Commercial cat food has been around since the 1860s, originating in England, but pet food manufacturing soon went overseas and started in the US too in 1890. Cat food subscription boxes, of course, began much much later.

Before there was commercial food, cats caught their own meals. Most cats coexisted with humans by helping to keep their fields and grains free from rodents. However, as cities grew over time, people stored grains differently, and rural areas turned urban, prey for cats became more scarce.

Because of the changes in the way humans stored and farmed, cats needed a new food source. Commercial cat food filled that gap, and today we have thousands of cat food choices available.

Over the years, cat food has evolved, and many commercial options are highly processed with fillers to keep costs down. But cat food was not the only thing that changed over the years. The way cat owners feed their cats has changed too. Today, more cat owners are looking for new cat food formulas focused on cat nutrition and ingredient quality.

Most cat parents just want the best for their cats. They want to feed a well-balanced diet that will help keep their cat healthy and happy. And, while you can feed your pet some human foods, formulated pet food is more likely to meet their needs.

The cat food companies we have reviewed below not only produce high-quality foods, but they also make life a lot easier with their cat food subscription boxes. Some of the companies even pre-portion food pouches to fit your cat’s calorie needs adding another level of convenience.

There are similar subscription boxes for dog owners too.

Cat Person

Cat Person, co-founded by Jimmy and Lambert, is an online cat supply store focused on cat nutrition and wellness. The co-founders are both cat lovers who were tired of deciphering the ingredient lists on the back of cat food packages.

Wanting to feed their cats and their foster cats the most nutritious foods available, they decided to create Cat Person. Their goal was to make it easier for cat parents to feed their cats with confidence while also eliminating a trip to the pet food store.

Plus, in addition to cat food, Cat Person, thought about other cat products and decided to come up with other versions that would be more comfortable and better suited to their feline friends.

Some of the products you can find on their website include beds, bowls, toys, serve and store sets for food, treats, dry food, and wet food.

Though you can purchase all of their food individually, you can also sign up for their meal plan. These meal plans make things more convenient and save you money when you sign up for recurring shipments.

When you sign up for The Cat Person cat food subscription box, you will be asked a series of questions, including how many cats you have, their name(s), what you currently feed them, what ingredients your cats don’t like, and the amount of food that your cats eat.

After answer the questionnaire, Cat People will make product recommendations. You will be given two choices:

  • The Starter Kit – Ships immediately and is $25. It includes 2-5 packs of wet food, a 2 lb bag of dry food, and a serve and store kit.
  • The Meal Plan – Ships every four weeks on a pre-specified date

If you order both the starter box and meal plan, as they recommend, your starter box will arrive in about a week. Then 3 weeks later, they will ship your first meal plan subscription box. After which, they will ship a new cat food subscription box every 4 weeks.

Best of all, when you order from Cat Person, you know you are ordering from a company that gives back. Cat Person donates cat food and supplies to their local foster cat organization.

For cats, they offer a chicken formula that contains chicken thighs, breast, liver, carrots, spinach, and a special blend of vitamins and nutrients.

Darwin’s Natural Pet Products

Darwin’s Natural Pet Products is a fresh raw pet food company that delivers your pet’s meals conveniently to your door. All of the food is formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist that creates recipes that “fit your pet’s ancestral diet.”

All of their top-quality ingredients used by Darwin’s are sourced from trusted farms. The ingredients are minimally processed to maximize the retention of vitamins and nutrients.

Though the meals are created to be fed to your cat raw, if your cat has a compromised immune system or is under 4 months old, they do recommend lightly sauteeing the food.

There are two different varieties of cat food:

  • Natural Selections: These meals are made from 100% real meat and contain no fillers, antibiotics, or grain.
  • Intelligent Design: These foods are designed for cats who have kidney disease and are available by prescription only.

There are three protein options under the Natural Selection option: Chicken, turkey, and lamb.

When you are ready to order your cat food subscription they will ask you series of questions, including your pet’s age, ideal weight, gender, breed, allergies, and ailments.

After answering their questions, they will make a product recommendation. Plus, they offer a discount on your first order. Prices vary based on your cat’s needs and the number of pets you sign up for the Darwin meal plans.

Smalls

Smalls use human-grade fresh ingredients in all of their feline recipes. All of the formulas are protein-rich, with 4 different protein options:

  • Fish – 85%  Wild Alaska Pollock, 9% Mackrel, 6% Salmon oil
  • Chicken – 92% breast and thigh, 6% liver, and 2% heart
  • Turkey – 91% skin-on turkey thigh and 9% chicken liver
  • Beef – 90% lean ground beef with 10% cow liver and heart

All of the protein options are available in smooth or ground textures. And all of their ingredients are USDA-certified, humanely treated, and sustainably-sourced. Plus, their foods are all free from preservatives, BPAs, and fillers. But they all have added vitamins and nutrients to provide a balanced diet.

The recipes are all gently cooked to retain optimal nutrtition.

In addition to their wet food, Smalls offers freeze-dried raw food. Though this looks like kibble, it is the furthest thing from it. Using freeze-dried raw food instead of fresh raw food can be more practical, as the freeze-dried version is easier to store, less messy, and more convenient for travel.

Their freeze dried options come in chicken, turkey, and duck proteins.

When you are all set to get started you will fill out their questionaire. Questions focus on topics like the number of cats in your household, what they currently eat, your budget, their gender, their age, and their current weight.

Afterward, Smalls will make their food recommendations. You may choose from wet food, dry food, or a combination meal plan. On your way to check out, you have an option to add additional products such as treats, toys, and litter.

After finishing your order, your cat food subscription box will ship every 4 weeks. The subscription is flexible and allows you to pause, change, or cancel your account at any time.
