Candles have been around for over 5,000 years, and though they were initially used for the light provided, their primary function is now for their fragrance and the ambiance they provide. Candle of the month clubs are easy ways to enjoy candles regularly.

Like many things, the first candles are believed to have originated in Ancient Egypt, though archeologists are unable to pinpoint the exact timeline they were invented. The first candles lacked the wick and were far from what our traditional candles of today look like; they were more torchlike in their appearance.

Instead of using wax and wick, they were made with a pithy core of reeds and animal fat and lacked the pleasant scents we associate with candles. Even though Ancient Egypt was crafting more traditional wicked candles by 3000 BC, it is thought that ancient Rome was using beeswax and papyrus before even then.

Regardless of where the first candle was created, many of the different countries crafted candles of their own variety before adventurers started trade between cultures. China used cylinder-like tubes with rice paper, Japan used wax from tree nuts, and India used boiled cinnamon tree fruit.

Since the advent of the lightbulb in the late 1870s, candle making started to decline. However, the latter half of the 20th century started to see the candle’s popularity begin to return. Over the centuries, candles have progressed from forms of light to use in religious ceremonies and then later as a popular gift, decoration, or fragrance.

And one of the best candle gifts on the market is the candle of the month club. Many of the candle subscriptions listed below are hand-crafted artisan candles. The candles are made with premium, safe products and are often free of toxins found in bulk-made candles.

People who love candles may also enjoy other fragrance-based clubs, like soap clubs and scent of the month clubs.

While there are many clubs to choose from, I personally love the Amazing Clubs Candle Club. This club sends out a 9-inch pillar candle and a 6-inch pillar candle each month. The candles are always high-quality, artisan, and all-natural. They also look and smell wonderful.

Amazing Clubs

Three orange candles from Amazing Clubs

With a name like Amazing Clubs, it shouldn’t be surprising that this service specializes in top-of-the-line clubs. They now have 42 different clubs to choose from, including some that are pretty typical and others that are much more unusual.

Their candle of the month club sends out two artisan candles every month. One is a 9-inch pillar candle, while the other is a 6-inch pillar candle. Each shipment also includes a newsletter called A Drop of Wax, which provides information about the candles and the people who created them.

The price of the club ranges from $27.95 to $29.95 per month, depending on the duration of your memebership. You can choose between month-to-month, 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month memberships. There is also a seasonal membership, which sends out candles every three months, rather than every month.

Columbia Fragrance Company

Columbia Fragrance Company Candle sandalwood Vanilla scented in a jar with a double wick on a marble end table with a small lion statue in the background

Columbia Fragrance Company started as a fun hobby, making candles as gifts for friends and family. However, as time went on, the hobby turned into a small side business that would later grow into a fulltime business in 2013.

The Columbia Fragrance Company handmakes all of its candles using recyclable and reusable packaging. Though some of their products they keep a small stock of, most are handmade to order.

The Columbia Fragrance Company is far more than a candle store. They offer a wide variety of fragrance solutions for the home and office. Some of the other items they carry include wickless candles, diffuser oils, fragrance mists, melts, and bath and body products.

The Columbia Fragrance company does not have a storefront. But, they do sell to a variety of retailers on the East Coast and some in the midwest. If these stores are not convenient for you, you can always order from their online store or sign up for their candle of the month club.

The candle of the month membership comes in a seven different options:

  • Best Selling Scents
  • The Fragrance of the Month
  • Reminiscent Collection
  • Garden Collection
  • Kitchen Collection
  • Yoga Collection
  • Outdoors Collection

All of the above memberships are available in a 3-month subscription for $72, a 6-month subscription for $144, or a 12-month subscription for $288. These prices include shipping costs.

Vellabox

Vellabox candles are artisan made and are safe to use without fear of health issues. All of their candles use lead-free wicks, use only phthalate-free fragrance oils. Plus, Vellabox prides itself on never using paraffin, which is a derivative of petroleum.

Plus, Vellabox strives to produce vegan products as much as possible, so they also steer clear of using beeswax. Though they use coconut and vegetable-based wax, they mainly make soy candles aiding in support of US soybean farmers. And often, their candles are scented with essential oils; there are a few that use phthalate-free fragrances.

Vellabox is a subscription business only and does not offer products a la carte. They offer three primary candle subscription boxes:

  • The Lucerna Box: 4 oz Candle – starting at $10 per month
  • The Ignis Box: 8 oz Candle – starting at $20 per month
  • The Vivere Box: 4 oz and 8 oz Candles – starting at $30 per month

All three subscriptions include a surprise gift, and as you increase your membership duration, you receive a discount on the monthly price. Each month’s candle fragrance is unique and is chosen based on the current season.

Subscription boxes are billed on the first of the month and are shipped the fifth of each month. All memberships have some flexibility and can be paused. You can also change subscription choices or change shipping addresses. All the changes can be done online.

Brooklyn Candle

Brooklyn Candle Studio, founded by Tamara Mayne in 2013, is an artisan candle company. Tamara started making candles in 2012 for friends and family as a way to help fulfill her creative side; however, it didn’t take long before she realized she had a real talent for making candles.

All of the Brookly Candles are handmade from 100% soy and are:

  • 100% Vegan
  • Cruelty-free
  • Lead-free
  • Petroleum-free
  • Phthalate-free

In addition to candles, the Brooklyn Candle Studio also sells other scented products and accessories like room mists, matches, wick trimmers, snuffers, and totes. Brooklyn Candle sells their candles in sets, individually, or their candle of the month subscription option.

The candle of the month membership includes one seasonally fragranced candle and a box of matches each month. You can choose to receive candles every month, every two, or every three months, depending on what you prefer. Additionally, the subscription is an ongoing membership and can be canceled anytime.

Because Brooklyn Candle understands that not all scents are for everyone, you have the option to exchange your candle within 14 days of purchase, though you are responsible for all shipping costs.

Wickbox

Wickbox, founded by Scarlett Sturgis, is a candle subscription company; however, they also sell some of their candles individually or in sets. And Wickbox sells more than just candles. They also have bath and body products, candle accessories, home goods, jewelry, glassware, and kitchen goods.

The Wickbox candle subscription comes in two different options:

  • Monthly Medium Box –  1 medium luxury candle per month created to your scent preferences. $29.95 per month, though discounts are available on the more extended subscription options
  • Monthly Large Box – 1 medium luxury candle per month created to your scent preferences. $39.95 per month, though discounts are available on the more extended subscription options

After signing up for your plan and preferred duration, month-to-month, 3, 6, or 12 months, you are then given a survey so that the people at Wick Box know which candles to include in your candle box. The survey helps create your personalized scent profile and requests you indicate your preferences when it comes to areas like floral, herbal, citrus, fruit, tropical, gourmand, earthy, clean, and seasonal.

Each of the month’s candles come in trendy vessels that are perfect for the current season. Plus, all candles come with a dust bag and the occasional surprise gift.

Happy Little Flame

Happy Little Flame, founded by Bex, started like so many candle stores do, as a hobby turned business. However, as much as Bex loves candles, she didn’t love the toxic properties most commercial candles contain. So, Bex made it her goal to create candles with clean ingredients free of harmful components.

All of Happy Little Flame’s candles are free from dyes, additives, stabilizers, phthalates, and petroleum. Instead, the candles are made from carefully sourced wax, phthalate-free oils, and vegan ingredients.

Happy Little Flame offers various products in addition to candles, including pottery, reed diffusers, outdoor sprays, smudge bundles, wax melts and warmers, room sprays, lotions, soaps, and subscription boxes.

The Happy Little Flames subscription comes in three different choices:

  • Monthly Candle Club $29: Two candles, one large and one small, plus a surprise gift.
  • Large Monthly Candle Club $49: Includes various popular products like candles, smudge, wax melts, room sprays, and bath and body products.
  • Seasonal Scent Box $79: This box is delivered every season, instead of every month. It includes a variety of products based on your preferences for floral, clean, sweet, and earthy, as well as whether you prefer rustic or classic scents.

Subscription boxes ship the 10th of the month, the costs of shipping is added at the time of checkout.

Lovespoon Candles Inc

Lovespoon Candles Inc, founded in 2013, is a candle company specializing in candles for the sophisticated. Though Lovespoon Candles are found throughout the country at high-end resorts, they also sell their products online.

The founder, Jenny from Wales, specializes in creating unique candle gifts, such as their monogram series and Cornerstone Collection. Their candles come in an array of vessels such as travel tins, jars, and their signature large round tins.

The Lovespoon Candle club offers four different subscription plans:

  • Month-to-month for $55 per box
  • 3 months for $52 per box
  • 6 months for $49 per box
  • 12 months for $45 per box

After choosing your plan, you are then asked a series of questions to ensure you receive the best selections according to your preferences. Some of the questions include:

  • Which 2 locations put a smile on your face? Bakery, Flower Shop, Orange Grove, Private Library, Sea Shore, Spice Market
  • Pick a couple of items that you naturally gravitate towards. Berries, Chocolate, Flowers, Incense, Leather, Oranges, Wood
  • Fragrance category preferences
  • Top three favorite scents

Once you have indicated your preferences, you are all set for checkout. Plus, for every subscription, Lovespoon donates a dollar to Feeding Children Everywhere.

Vanilla Candle Company

Vanilla Candle Company started in 2019 in Los Angeles, California, by Lisa Mawle with the dream of creating vanilla-based candles. All of the candles are handmade using 100% soy wax. The candles are hand-poured with a unique blend of essential oils.

The Vanilla Candle Company has multiple candle collections including The Seasons, Stars, Classics, Rare, Banquet, Spa, and Reserve.

All of the candles include vanilla and often another complimentary fragrance like coconut, clove, apple, pear, lavender, and nutmeg and cream.

If you would like to receive a variety of candle fragrances, signing up for the Vanilla Candle Company club is the perfect solution. If you sign up for the candle subscription, you will automatically save 15% and get free shipping.

You can pick from the variety of themes listed above, except for the Reserve Collection. In addition to those above, you can also choose from Surprise Me, Can’t Get Enough (You choose your favorite scent), Never-Ending Fall, and Never-Ending Christmas.

The club costs $13.59 per month, and you can cancel or pause your membership anytime.

Frostbeard Studio

Frostbeard Studio is unusual, as their candle of the month clubs specifically focuses on book-themed candles. How can a candle be book themed? You might ask. Well, the company takes an artistic approach based on whatever fictional work they’re focusing on.

The Permanent Collection of candles on the site is an example of the styles that you can expect. Some examples include:

  • Bookstore: Mahogany, leather, and coffee scents
  • Headmaster’s Office: Fireplace, cedarwood, and lemon scents
  • Halfling Hills: Clover, moss, and pipe tobacco scents
  • Sherlock’s Study: Cherrywood, tobacco, and rain scents
  • Wizardy Buttery Drink: Butterscotch, caramel, and rum scents

The candle of the month club costs $18 per month, regardless of your subscription length. You get one hand-poured soy candle per shipment. Each candle is themed around a literary work.

Wicksly

Wicksly is another club that ships out one candle per month. This time the club costs $15 per month if you pay month-to-month. A 3-month prepay subscription costs $45, while a 6-month prepay costs $90 and a 12-month prepay costs $165.

Wicksly focuses on providing high-quality candles, ones that are made in the United States. The candles are entirely made from soy, and are both non-toxic and lead-free.

Each candle is 5 ounces each and has an estimated burn time of 40 hours. Wicksly states that the scent is excellent for the size of the candles and the number of positive reviews reinforces this idea. The scent is different each month and is a surprise, as Wicksly provides no details about the scents that you can expect.
