Knives have had a variety of uses throughout history, going as far back as prehistoric times. Knives are used for tools, weapons, culinary, and cutlery. And because weapons have a multitude of uses, it is no surprise there is an even greater variety of knives available. This amount of variety is one reason why knife of the month clubs are so appealing.

Though many of us use knives daily when eating, it was not common practice to have them for cutting food when dining. Instead, knives were used instead of forks back before the middle ages. However, following that period forks gained in popularity, giving knives the particular task of cutting food when at the table.

Knives have, however, long been used as tools and weapons, especially during prehistoric times when hunting. Knives are an especially valuable tool for hunting, not so much for the hunt itself; instead, they are used to help clean and skin the animal.

Initially, the first knives were not made of metal as most are today, but instead from flint. It wasn’t until 4,000 years ago that the first metal knife was crafted.

As mentioned earlier there are a large variety of knives and knife classifications to choose from today, including:

  • Kitchen and cutlery
  • Karambit – A type of curved knife
  • OTF – Where the blade extends Out The Front
  • Combat style
  • Daggers
  • Throwing
  • Fixed Blade
  • Folding
  • Hunting

Though this is far from all of the available styles, the knives featured in the knife of the month clubs below fall into the hunting, tactical, OTF, Fixed blade, and folding varieties, you will not be seeing any chef knives in these subscriptions.

There is a wide selection of knife of the month clubs, which is ideal for any knife enthusiast. For those looking to build their knife collection, there are subscriptions starting as low as $9.99 per month. For those who are looking to add unique and harder to find knives to their collection, there are those clubs too. There is even a knife of the month subscription that includes a new watch each month also.

Monthly Knife Club

Three collapsable knivees of various brands all small pocket size

Monthly Knife Club specializes in monthly subscription knife clubs, though they have a few individual knives available for purchase.

The Monthly Knife Club offers five different knife of the month clubs:

  • Standard Subscription $10. These knives are the tried and true, no-frills yet solidly built and reliable. Most of the knives in this club are stainless steel and spring assisted. These blades are the ideal option for those just starting their knife collection.
  • Name Brand starting at $25. The brands you may see in this club include big names like Kershaw, CRKT, SOG, SPYDER CO, and BUCK. This option will bring your starter collection to the next level.
  • Fixed Blade starting at $45. These are your typical hunting and survival varieties. They are all functional, but many are also “beautifully hand forged.”
  • ONYX Knife starting at $119. Though an investment, the ONYX plan includes knives with a retail value between $149-$250; it is the best way to add high-end knives to your collection, without the high-end price tag.
  • Knife and Watch starting at $99. Every month, you receive a watch and knife combo with a value higher than the monthly cost. There are four different options, from $99 to $399 per month.

Each of the clubs offers four options; however, unlike the knife and watch option, all others have the choice of additional products in the box.

For each new level, you get more gear in addition to that month’s knife, some of the more advanced choices include: hats and shirts, survival kits, tactical gear, and multi-tools.

Orders are sent out between the 15th-25th of each month, so orders need to be in no later than the 9th to receive that month’s knife. All of the blades in the different clubs are preselected and are not eligible for exchange or returns. All plans are month-to-month and auto-renew on the first of each month.

Also, to be eligible to purchase knives from the Monthly Knife Club, you must be at least 18 years of age.
