Low carb and keto diets have become a common way for people to improve their health, but the process can be challenging. There’s simply so much that you need to think about and plan. This can get difficult fast when life is already hectic and you barely have time to shop.

I just returned from a trip to Thailand, and it was impossible to remain low-carb while on vacation. Everything was noodles, rice, and bread. You can't exactly order a big steak from a noodle shop.

Meal kits are a great way around the problem of finding low-carb foods. Most people are satisfied with just meat and salt, although the carnivore diet is gaining popularity!

Of the list below, Green Chef is my #1 choice, after trying each of these brands!

Low carb meal kits deal with many of the stressful parts for you, including recipe design and sourcing all the ingredients. Your main responsibility is simply preparing the meals at the other end.

There aren’t many companies that specialize in low carb meal kits, but that doesn’t make the idea any less viable. Multiple services provide low carb plans as one of their options. Such plans can provide you with the low carb meals that you need. Take a look at this list to find out the best options for you.

Home Chef

While the company has appealing meals, the low carb angle is a little unclear.

Home Chef is pretty much the only low carb meal kit which was not featured on our keto meal kit list. Home Chef starts you off with a comprehensive taste profile.

This includes asking various questions like whether you have dietary preferences, the types of food you want to eat and whether there are specific ingredients that you would like to avoid. The taste profile is an appealing aspect, but Home Chef never clarifies how this relates to the meals that you receive.

Another interesting feature is the weekly menu. There are 15 different recipes to choose from. You’re even able to make selections for multiple weeks in advance. While it isn’t immediately clear which meals are low carb and which ones aren’t, Home Chef does provide nutritional details for each recipe.

Green Chef

The keto plan from this company is perfect for any low carb dieters.

While Green Chef doesn’t have a low carb plan, they do have a keto meal plan, which is even better. Keto is basically a very low carb diet. Meals from the Green Chef Keto Plan typically contain no more than 30 grams of net carbs per serving. The carb content may be a little high for any strict keto dieters but should be perfect for anyone on a general low carb diet.

The Keto Plan is a 2-person option from Green Chef and provides you with 3 different recipes each week. Green Chef uses a weekly rotating menu that contains 5 different recipes. You should be able to choose which of the 5 you receive, but that’s it for customization. You can’t even alter the number of meals you get in a week.

Even with the limited meal selection, Green Chef is a powerful choice. Few companies offer low carb plans and even fewer have keto options. At least with Green Chef you can be confident that all your meals will be low carb.

PlateJoy

This service provides custom meal plans, rather than conventional meal kits.

PlateJoy isn’t your typical meal kit service. You don’t get a box of ingredients that you then use to create your meal. Instead, the service provides meal plans. It gives you the ability to create a custom meal plan that is much more personal and comprehensive than anything you could make with a regular meal kit. After all, the company doesn’t need to prep and package ingredients for you – so they have more flexibility.

The style mightn’t sound all that appealing and there are plenty of other places where you can get meal plans. Even so, it does work well (as I’ve found out myself).  PlateJoy is especially relevant for low carb diets. Other companies with such diets often have a limited selection of meals to choose from. Those meals mightn’t always fit your definition of low carb either. In contrast, PlateJoy has many more recipes.

PlateJoy is convenient too. The service works with Instacart to get the groceries you need delivered to you. You’re able to pick and choose exactly what you want. This makes the process easier and you can even use Instacart for your regular groceries too. Sure, there are more steps with PlateJoy than with other meal kit services and the style won’t suit everyone. Even so, it can be a useful service, especially when so few other companies offer low carb meal kits.

Terra’s Kitchen (temporarily closed)

This healthy meal kit service provides plenty of different dietary options.

It’s easy to see why Terra’s Kitchen is such a popular service. The company focuses on fast and healthy foods for every meal, rather than just dinner. It also follows an unusual style. Unlike most companies, you’re not choosing from a weekly menu. Instead, Terra’s Kitchen has a large menu, where you are able to choose meals individually.

When I tried Terra’s Kitchen myself, I noticed that some of the meals from one week weren’t available the next, so there is some variation over time too.

You’re able to filter the meals based on eating styles and a selection of other factors. Low carb is available as an option. The low carb meals have less than 45 grams of carbs per serving, while snacks have less than 30 grams of carbs per serving. You could also consider keto meals, where the carbs are less than 20 net grams per serving per meals.

You’re not just limited to a few meals either. Even when you select keto (the stricter approach), there is a decent selection of meals to choose from.
